The Story Behind Guests on Earth by Lee Smith

I saw author Lee Smith speak at this year’s SIBA Trade Show and met her this past weekend at the Southern Festival of Books. Her latest novel, Guests on Earth, releases today from Algonquin Books. The publisher has produced this video about the inspiration for Guests on Earth and Smith’s writing process. I recommend this five-minute video to anyone who loves southern literature. After watching it, I’m sure you’ll understand why I walked away from both of my brief encounters with Smith thinking about the generous and brave soul I’d just met.

I was fortunate to get an early copy of Guests on Earth, and it is one of the most beautifully written novels I have ever read. Thank you for sharing the back story of Smith’s novel. It is one that will stay with you.

Thank you so much for sharing this, Alison. I too was so taken by Ms. Smith’s presentation at SIBA, Her honesty and her grace. I have started GUESTS ON EARTH and it is indeed a marvel.

Kat, Katie and Erika: let me know when you’ve finished GUESTS ON EARTH. I’m eager to talk about this book with others. Lee Smith is speaking at the Georgia Center for the Book on October 30.
